Mayhem in three boroughs as seven people killed, four more wounded from gun violence: police
A surge of deadly violence that spanned three boroughs and 24 hours left seven people dead from gunfire and four more - including a 7-year-old girl - wounded, police said Sunday.
The gory spike meant the city’s weekly murder rate increased fivefold from 2014 — jumping from two last year to 10 this year.
The bloodshed continued into Sunday, when a 24-year-old man was fatally shot at 2:49 p.m. on Briggs Ave. and E. 194th St. in Fordham, the Bronx. Police said David Hooks was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he died. The cops had no motive.
At 9 p.m., a stray bullet grazed a 7-year-old girl’s left ankle as she walked with her dad on E.158 St. and Cauldwell Ave. in Morrisania, cops said.
The mayhem reached its peak hours earlier, when a gunman opened fire at the Ingersoll Houses on Prince St. in downtown Brooklyn at 1:45 a.m. Sunday — killing three men.
Calvin Clinkscales, 43, and Lacount Simmons, 39, were shot in the head and died at the scene, cops said.
The third victim, Herbert Brown, 76 (photo), appeared to be a bystander. He was shot in the abdomen, police sources said, and died at New York Methodist Hospital.
The two younger men who were shot and killed at the Ingersoll Houses died at the scene, while the older victim was taken to the hospital with a critical abdomen wound. He later died from his injuries.
“He said, ‘I love you. I’m always here for you,’” Smith-Brown said.
Two men were shot in the head after a gunman opened fire in the courtyard of the Ingersoll Houses early Sunday.
Police took a 21-year-old man into custody for questioning.
The triple murder added to a stretch of violence that began Saturday evening when a man was shot dead in front of a Flatbush cleaners.
Crime scene unit detectives photograph the scene, strewn with yellow evidence markers, on E. Tremont Ave. at around 4:45 a.m. Sunday morning following an earlier double shooting.
He took two bullets to the chest, and the shooter got into a car and sped off, cops said. Yasser died at Kings County Hospital.
In the Bronx, another argument ended in death. Nestor Suazo, 25, was killed and a 34-year-old woman was critically wounded at E. Tremont and Clinton Aves. in East Tremont shortly before 8 p.m., police said.
